Abstract: " Moving From Analytics to Operational Business Intelligence: The Changing Role of the Data Warehouse" presents the results of a survey of International DB2 Users Group (IDUG) members conducted in July 2007. The survey and this report were produced by Unisphere Research (publishers of Database Trends and Applications), and sponsored by GoldenGate Software.

Operational business intelligence depends on several emerging technologies. Perhaps the most fundamental, however, is the ability to access real-time data from production systems for analysis without slowing down the operational systems themselves. The next step in operational business intelligence would be to apply the results of that analysis to operational systems also in real- or near-real time to ensure maximum operational efficiency.

This survey revealed that companies are challenged to manage more real-time data coming out of their applications. And many companies are not just seeking to view and manage data that is less than one hour old, but even just a few seconds old.

Key findings in this 17-page report include:

More than half the enterprises have supported data warehouses for more than five years.
Twenty percent of data warehouses have more than five terabytes of data .
Almost half of the data warehouses are growing between 10 and 50 percent annually.
Financial and accounting databases are the most popular data source for data warehouses.
Approximately half the respondents refreshed the data in the data warehouse once a day.
Business analysts remain the largest single user group of data warehouses.
Using analytical data to guide automated business process is the most popular application of operational business intelligence.
